Artists fly to Sydney for AGNSW Archibald, Sulman and Wynne Events

Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists had an incredible week in Sydney, where they attended the Art Gallery of NSW for the 2025 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize exhibitions. It was a huge milestone for the studio, with three of our artists celebrated on a national stage:
– Margaret Campbell and Charles Inkamala as Wynne Prize finalists
– Adrian Robertson as an Archibald Prize finalist, with his portrait of filmmaker Warwick Thornton
One standout moment was seeing Adrian’s painting of Warwick Thornton displayed next to Clara Adolphs’ portrait of Adrian – a meaningful connection that began when Clara visited him in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) last year.

For our artists, travelling from the desert to Sydney was more than just a trip – it was a major step in their careers and a chance to share their voices and stories with a wider audience. It was Charles Inkamala’s first time in Sydney, and for all involved, the experience of connecting face-to-face with fellow artists, curators and industry professionals was invaluable.
The trip was filled with moments of growth, joy, and recognition – from viewing First Nations works at the new Yiribana Gallery, to participating in the AGNSW artist lunch & Opening Night, and sharing meals and laughs across the city. These experiences build confidence, expand networks, and affirm the importance of Bindi’s supported studio model – one that champions professional, inclusive pathways for artists with disabilities.
This experience was deeply meaningful for the artists, both personally and professionally. Leaving the desert and travelling to a major city like Sydney – for some, for the very first time – opened up new perspectives and possibilities. It was a chance to step into the national spotlight, share their stories in person, and see their work celebrated alongside some of Australia’s most well-known artists.

Engaging directly with other artists, curators, and art professionals helped build confidence, strengthened cultural pride, and inspired new ideas. For the artists, this wasn’t just a trip – it was a major career milestone.
For the Bindi team, this experience reaffirmed the importance of culturally strong, disability-inclusive support that empowers artists to grow their practice, build networks, and take up space on national platforms.
A huge thanks to support workers Angelo, Jatinder, and Wale for their incredible care throughout the journey. And a very special thank you to Ruth McMillan, BMAA Art Studio Co-ordinator, started the whole process– your leadership and dedication made it all happen.
And of course, sincere thanks to RAF (Regional Arts Fund) for making the trip a reality– your support continues to open doors for our artists.
